Final Reflection
In the beginning of capstone I was nervous and scared, this was all new to me so I didn’t know what to do. I had many ideas on what to do but I didn't know how I would achieve it. At the time my parents told me that we were going to move after the first semester so I didn’t know if I should start or not so I wasted my time doing nothing because my thought was we would be moving so why do something you're not gonna be able to finish. Then near the end of the first semester my parents had a change of mind and that really messed me up. They thought it would be better to move at the end of the year. I became stressed out because I didn’t have much planned, I didn’t even have a mentor yet. My first idea was to help out at a soup kitchen but some people already took it. Then my second idea was the workout club, I used to be part of Brian workout club, I thought it would be good since I work out as well. So I had to scramble around finding a mentor and planning what to do. Nothing worked, I asked the people I can but they weren’t available and I was stumped. For the rest of the first semester I didn’t know what to do anymore, none of my plans worked out. Then something happened, it was like a message from God pointing me to the right direction and there he was my childhood friend. He goes to a different school but we hung out with each other on the weekends. His school did some community service in Hartford and that was when he told me about Journey Home and a Hand Up. I went to the website to check it out and sign up to help and see what it was like. It was really like a miracle! I met Alison, who’s now my mentor, she’s the coordinator and it was rare for her to do deliveries. I found that out after a few weeks of not seeing her when I went to volunteer. A few weeks after that I asked her to be my mentor and she was delighted to. I’m really thankful to my friend for helping me out. At first it was weird for me to call someone who could be twice or even thrice my age by their first name.
After a month or two I REALIZED I needed to do more, there were not many people that volunteered. So I decided to make a group of people that can help them every week if they lack people. It was like everything was planned, even though I’m a christian it was hard to believe how everything perfectly happened. After forming the group we didn’t even plan on helping with my capstone because my friend needed some help on that day with his capstone. On that day a group had reserved the spot to volunteer for Journey Home and A Hand Up, but at the last second they canceled and I got a message from Alison saying they needed people and I was like we got the people. The schedule worked out as well, my friend’s capstone was from 8 am-9 am while Journey Home starts at 10 am-1 pm. It was really unfortunate that my group only got to do one volunteer before the Covid-19 incident spread. I enjoyed talking to people there, although it was awkward at first because I’m not really a sociable person but once I got to know them it was easier to talk to them. My one regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. If I heard about them sooner, there would have been so much more I could have done, but I’m still thankful that I got the chance to meet them and I’m thankful to the people who helped me out. I hope that this project will be continued on by someone. It’s a good chance for people to help out and meet people around Hartford and more places.
